Reflected Field I & II

Reflected Field is a new work within my Fragment series exploring the creation of landscape through a process of folding and manipulating steel sheet under hydraulic pressure. This process creates forms that mimic both liquid and solid rock. This method represents the slow kinetic movements of tectonic plates crushing together, the shaping of human led intervention and the erosion of water and air flowing over land, creating intricate contours within the earth.

Reflected Field is made up of two wall panels that are a mirror image of each other. One celebrates the Australian landscape through a rusted surface emulating the red and brown earth that is synonymous with the Australian identity. While the other celebrates the intricate layering of contours and lines by masking the field to a black gradient, removing the distractions of surface details and reducing the image to pure form, as if viewing the landscape by night.

Fault Sector explores the way in which steel is transformed through a process of repeated folding and manipulation, creating forms that mimic both liquid and solid rock. These forms are highly kinetic simulating the movements of tectonic plates crushing together, the shaping of human lead intervention or the erosion of water flowing over the land creating waterway and intricate contours in the earth.

Space Displace

"Grids and the idea of units of sculpture form the main inspiration for the works in [Space Displace]. Each work in the exhibition is comprised of a series of units, all of which are of equal width and constructed from the same materials.

Movement is also suggested in these works through the use of line, the shapes of works such as Impact combine a complex curve with the rectangular shape of the units. The heavy curve in Impact gives the appearance that the form is traveling at high speed through space, creating a jet stream behind it almost like a comet. In all of Lorrimer’s work the contrast between rigidity of the materials he uses and the flowing, curved lines he creates in his works is central to his aesthetic. For [Space Displace] the artist was inspired by exploring how to transform a static, rigid piece of steel sheeting into a seemingly dense and solid three-dimensional form, whilst maintaining the integrity of the original raw material.
